Etched Glass Bus Shelter (Virginia Hospital Center)
Overview
This unique shelter is part of a series of etched-glass bus shelters that were installed at various Arlington locations and were designed through ArtsWork, an employment program for creative youth. Under the leadership of local artist Preston Sampson, the students generated ideas through hand-drawn sketches and digital manipulation to create several proposals for review by Arlington’s Commission for the Arts. The selected design for the Virginia Hospital Center shelters was based on abstracted medical symbols. The project provided Arlington youth the unique opportunity to work under the direction of a professional artist and create a permanent work of public art for the County.
Bus shelters designed by the ArtsWork team are installed in Arlington Heights, Buckingham, Cherrydale, Clarendon, and at Virginia Hospital Center. ArtsWork students involved in the project include Reed Griffith, Jenny Korns, Ferdaous Moumni, Luis Roman, Kayla Scheiner, and Jerome Young.
