It's Dark Star Park Day! Celebrate this uniquely Arlington, Virginia moment, the shadow alignment that happens once a year, marking the day in 1860 when William Ross acquired the land that would become Rosslyn. Gather at the artwork that launched Arlington Public Art, the Dark Star sculpture.
Shadow alignment at 9:32 a.m.
Every year on Aug. 1, visitors arrive at the 0.4 acre park to witness the coming together of shadows. the park's large spheres are designed to resemble fallen, extinguished stars. One section of the park contains spheres and poles with shadow-images inset in the ground.
Sculpted by famed artist Nancy Holt and installed in 1984, the sculpture consists of five spheres, two pools, four steel poles, a stairway, a large tunnel for passage, a small tunnel for viewing and plantings.
