Cakes, Crafts and Carnival Games at the Arlington County Fair

Here in the nation’s capital, it’s usually political races that take center stage. But for one week in mid-August, a stone’s throw from America’s political epicenter, a different sort of competition elicits squeals. And oinks. Piglet races!

Racing piglets!

Small but mighty, the Arlington County Fair attracts 70,000 people annually for competitive exhibits showcasing local talent, midway rides and games, live outdoor music and vendors. Did we mention the racing piglets?

One of the largest free events on the East Coast, the fair has been providing quality entertainment for over 40 years. Each year, Arlington’s Thomas Jefferson Community Center is transformed into a special place with something for people of all ages to experience. Favorite fair traditions range from pony rides and carnival games to giant lemonades, funnel cakes and deep-fried pickles.

Find a spot up close on the racing track when the Hollywood Hogs All-Star Racing Team performs! Awkward, cuddly and cute piglets scramble down the track during multiple races each day the fair is open.

There are also plenty of new happenings in 2018:

  • There’s going to be LOVE at the fair! You can take a selfie in front of the giant LOVE sign, reminding everyone that Virginia Is for Lovers of all kinds. Share your photos on social media, using #LOVEVA, #arlingtoncofair and #stayarlington!
  • Explore the past at the Virginia World War I and World War II Profiles of Honor Mobile Tour, an interactive exhibit. Step inside for a mini-museum experience showing Virginia’s integral role in both wars, and learn the personal stories of Virginians who served. You can even bring your own WWI and WWII-related photographs to be scanned for inclusion in the Virginia Profiles of Honor project, preserving them for future generations.
  • Experience the power of collaboration when you hang out with You Are Magic, an interactive, inflatable sculpture. Hold hands and touch the one of the handprint kiosks to see the deflated sculpture come to life expanding into the words, You Are Magic. The sculpture fills with air, as long as participants hold hands. Release and the circuit is broken, making the sculpture deflate.
