Café Scientifique
Café Scientifique is an updated version of the French and Brittish salons of the 17th and 18th century, which combined science and
technology discussions and their impact on society with good food and drink. Café Scientifique promotes public engagement with
science, making it accountable, in an informal and accessible setting. Audiences consist of people who are interested in science
and technology, but who may have never had the opportunity to discuss their views with and ask questions of someone “in the know.” The setting is relaxed and informal, with food and drinks available. The speaker, ordinarily one but sometimes several speakers,
takes about 20 minutes to introduce the subject (with words or pictures, no PowerPoint). It is then followed by an hour or so of discussion and Q&A. The speaker is
encouraged to pose questions to the audience as well to simulate dialogue. In short it is a place to eat, drink and talk about science!
Presentations generally begin at 6:30 p.m. The current location is at the atrium in the National Science Foundation (NSF) building in cooperation with The Front Page
Restaurant, 4201 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington between Wilson Boulevard and Fairfax Drive, and one block south of the Ballston-Marymount University Metro stop on the
Orange Line. The Front Page Restaurant.
