Arlington Hosts Sled Hockey Clinic

Arlington County hosted a sled hockey clinic at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex on Sunday, March 4th. Sponsored by USA Disabled Hockey, Southeastern District, National Rehabilitation Hospital’s BlazeSports Club and United Spinal Association, the clinic was held for children and adults with physical disabilities, and focused on the fundamentals of sled hockey including sled set up, picking (propelling the sled), passing and shooting. Bob Banach of USA Disabled Hockey, two members of the United Spinal Association Rangers Sled Hockey Team and student volunteers from Arlington schools provided coaching assistance to 13 sled participants. Plans are in the works for future clinics, as well as the Special Hockey International Tournament in April.

Ice time for the clinic and upcoming tournament was donated by Arlington County as part its community programming. Arlington has actively sought out organizations within the disabled community as user groups for the Kettler Capitals Iceplex, offering them free ice time for clinics and tournaments. No other ice rink in the Washington, D.C. region has actively sought out and offered free ice time, on a consistent basis, to these organizations.
